MONETIZATION

Hey Operators! 👋

Congratulations!

You just sold your first newsletter sponsorship.

The advertiser paid. You ran the ad. You celebrated with a moderately overpriced IPA.

Life is good.

Then something terrible happens.

The advertiser asks, "So... how'd we do?"

Oh No Wtf GIF

Uh-oh.

Suddenly you're frantically digging through your beehiiv analytics like a raccoon looking for leftovers.

Here's something worth understanding.

👉 Selling the first ad is a transaction. Getting an advertiser to come back is how you start building a business.

And that requires a little more than cashing the check.

Before a campaign runs, ask the advertiser what they're hoping to accomplish.

✅ Website visits?

✅ Event registrations?

✅ Awareness for a grand opening?

Then give them a clear recap afterward.

Include what you can actually measure: delivered emails, estimated opens where useful, link clicks, and other available results.

Don't claim a click equals a sale.

And don't assume the campaign failed just because the advertiser didn't receive 400 phone calls before lunch.

Sometimes the goal is awareness. Sometimes it's immediate action.

The important thing is agreeing on what success looks like before you start.

Then follow up.

Ask what they learned. What they'd change. Whether another placement makes sense.

Because the real opportunity isn't selling an ad once.

It's becoming a marketing partner that local businesses want to work with again.

Your next move: Create a simple one-page advertiser recap template and use it after your next sponsorship.

P.S. If your entire advertiser report consists of "Trust me, bro. People totally saw it," we should probably talk.
