The Psychology of Showing Up Every Day.
Hey Operators! 👋
Ever notice how you recognize certain local businesses without remembering where you first heard of them?
Their signs.
Their trucks.
Their sponsorship at the Little League field.
You see them so often, you practically feel like you know the owner.
Well, congratulations. You've just stumbled into a little psychology.
It's called the Mere Exposure Effect.
Psychologist Robert Zajonc explored this phenomenon back in 1968, and the idea is surprisingly simple:
The more familiar something becomes through repeated exposure, the more positively people may feel about it.
Now think about your daily local newsletter.
Every morning, your publication's name appears in someone's inbox.
Monday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday…(and if you’re crazy, Saturday & Sunday too)
Maybe they open it. Maybe they don't.
But your name gets another opportunity to become familiar.
And when your content consistently delivers something useful?
That familiarity can develop into recognition, credibility, and eventually trust.
Your newsletter isn't just delivering information. It's becoming part of someone's daily routine.
Now here's where things get interesting...
The same principle can work for your advertisers.
A local restaurant sponsoring one newsletter issue gets a single opportunity to be noticed.
But a restaurant appearing repeatedly throughout the month?
That's multiple chances for readers to recognize the business when they're deciding where to eat.
It's one reason recurring sponsorship packages can be more compelling than one-off ads.
Of course, repetition doesn't automatically create trust or sales. Your content still has to be worth opening.
The takeaway?
You don't always need to be the loudest voice in town. Sometimes, you just need to be the most consistently useful.
And that's a pretty powerful position for a local newsletter operator.

P.S. Showing up consistently is good. Showing up six times a day is how you get blocked by your own mother. 😂
