OPPORTUNITY

Hey Operators! 👋

Worried someone else might launch a newsletter in your town?

Relax.

Your biggest competitor probably isn't another publisher.

It's Netflix.

TikTok.

Your neighbor's Facebook rant about the mysterious helicopter flying over town.

And approximately 11,000 other things competing for people's attention.

Your real competition is indifference.

Nobody wakes up thinking:

"You know what my life is missing? Another email newsletter."

But they DO care about things that affect their lives.

The new restaurant opening downtown.

That road closure making their commute miserable.

The weekend festival they almost missed.

Or why there are suddenly 47 traffic cones on Main Street.

People don't necessarily want a newsletter. They want useful local information.

And that's an important distinction.

So instead of asking, "How do I make my newsletter better?"

Try asking:

"What would make someone genuinely disappointed if they missed tomorrow's issue?"

That's a much more interesting editorial question.

  • Maybe it's your monster list of local events.

  • Maybe it's a quick rundown of what's changing around town.

  • Maybe it's discovering a business they've never heard of.

Whatever it is, make that your signature reason to subscribe.

Your next move: Ask five readers what they'd miss most if your newsletter disappeared.

Their answers might surprise you.

And if all five say "the unsubscribe button"...😅

Well, we've got some work to do.
